Profhilo at a glance

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is an injectable treatment that uses specially processed hyaluronic acid and, unlike dermal fillers, is not designed to add volume. “It is a treatment that hydrates the skin and rejuvenates its texture, and it works against ageing” thanks to its high levels of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring compound that helps improve skin tone, texture and elasticity.
In the UK, Profhilo is also commonly described as a “skin booster” or an “injectable moisturiser”, because its main purpose is to improve the quality of the skin itself rather than to reshape the face.

Profhilo vs dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are used mainly to restore or add volume and to give structure . Profhilo is not designed to add volume: it is used to improve hydration, skin quality and elasticity. The two treatments are not interchangeable, and some patients have both. Your dermatologist will advise which approach suits your skin and your goals.[

Who is Profhilo suitable for?

Profhilo is suitable for all adults over 18, men and women. It is recommended for people who do not want to use fillers or anti-wrinkle injections to improve their face, as well as for those who have had fillers or anti-wrinkle injections but would like their skin to gain hydration and better texture.
“As we get older, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin begins to decrease naturally, which causes the skin to lose its natural firmness and elasticity.”
Most people begin to see the effects of hyaluronic acid depletion as they reach their 30s, and Profhilo is an ideal treatment for anyone who wants to see an improvement in skin texture. Typical concerns include dry or dull-looking skin, loss of firmness, and skin that looks tired or crepey.

Which areas can Profhilo be used on with good results?

Profhilo is usually injected into the skin at five key points on each side of the face. It can also be used to improve skin quality around the neck and décolletage. More recently it has also been used on the abdomen, the inner thighs, above the knee and the inner arm.

When is Profhilo not recommended?

Profhilo is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as there are no studies confirming its safety for the foetus. In addition, the manufacturer does not recommend Profhilo for people with autoimmune conditions. However, in cases of autoimmune conditions that have been well controlled for many years, treatment may be possible, always in agreement with the treating physician.

How is Profhilo administered?

Profhilo is given in two sessions 4–6 weeks apart, followed by one maintenance session every 6 months. A session takes about 20 minutes and is generally well tolerated. For anyone who is particularly sensitive to pain, an anaesthetic cream applied 30 minutes before the treatment is recommended.

What happens at your appointment

You will receive full aftercare instructions at your appointment. If you have any concerns after treatment, please contact the clinic.

Before treatment, our dermatologists or our specialist nurse will discuss your skin concerns and medical history to confirm that Profhilo is suitable for you. Alternatively, you can book your treatment straight away with out team. The treatment itself takes about 20 minutes. If you are particularly sensitive to pain, an anaesthetic cream be applied beforehand.

Aftercare: You can usually return to your normal activities straight away. Small, temporary lumps at the injection points, mild redness, slight swelling or minor bruising are common and usually settle within a few days. To help the skin settle, we generally advise that you:

  • avoid touching or massaging the treated area for the first 24 hours;
  • avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and very hot showers for the first 24–48 hours;
  • avoid facials and other skin treatments on the treated area for two weeks;
  • apply sunscreen daily.

Results and how long they last

Profhilo works by improving the hydration and quality of the skin, so the changes are gradual and natural rather than dramatic. After the first two sessions, a maintenance session every 6 months is recommended to keep the benefit. Results vary from person to person and cannot be guaranteed.

Are there any side effects?

Apart from minor bruising, skin irritation or slight swelling at the injection sites, no other side effects have been reported to date.
